About Us

In 2019, a dedicated group of volunteers completed the application to become designated Main Street Iowa Community. This local effort garnered interest for many stakeholders in our community including the City of Nevada, Nevada Community School District, Nevada Economic Development, and the Nevada Chamber of Commerce. The application was approved and we became an official MSI community in August of 2019.

History of Nevada, Iowa

Nevada, Iowa is centrally located with a population of 7,000. We are the county seat of Story County.

Iowa became a separate territory in 1838 and the 29th state in the year 1846. The area that would eventually be called Story County had no history of its own. In 1853, the county was formed and named after Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story. As the years passed and as market conditions changed, Story County became more attractive. The Legislature in 1853 appointed commissioners to locate a county seat for Story County. The two commissioners who made the fine decision were Joseph M. Thrift of Boone County Johnson Edgar of Jasper County. They inspected the county and selected land in the east half of the northwest quarter and the west half of the northeast quarter of Section 7, Township 83, Range 22, west of the Fifth PM. Their assignment required them to name the new town. Joseph Thrift asked that it be named Nevada after the “Eldorado of the Rocky Mountains.” A surveyor laid out the original plat with 49 blocks.
